Is A Labrador Really For You?
No doubt everyone has seen the Andrex advertisement and has longed for an Andrex puppy.
The only problem is Andrex puppies do not stay that size and that cute forever.
Any responsible new owner needs to consider many things before bringing home an Andrex puppy.
For a start the new puppy will, no doubt, have accidents in your home in the early days. They are going to keep you,
and possibly the neighbours, awake at night and worst of all, they are going to chew (anything and everything), more
so when they are bored!
Labradors grow to a large size and have extremely healthy appetites so this should be taken into consideration before any
decision to extend your family is made. Any reputable breeder will inform you as to how much it will cost to keep a Labrador,
i.e. food bills, vets bills, accessories, beds and toys etc. They are not the cheapest dogs in the world to keep and look after
but this is offset greatly by the loyalty, devotion and joy that they bring into your lives.
Do you have the time and energy to exercise a dog that will need plenty? Will you be prepared to take your dog out for a walk
every single day? Do you have a park nearby where your dog can run freely but safely? Your dog will not care what the weather
is like, will you?
One of the main points you need to consider is whether you have sufficient time to give a growing puppy the attention and
training that it needs. Labradors are known for wanting to please their owners and are one of the easiest breed to train but they
still need to be taught right from wrong.
It is not advisable to purchase a puppy for a child as the child will soon tire when the puppy starts to grow and is not as much fun.
That said Labradors are well known for being ideal, loyal family dogs.
So you have decided you definitely want a Labrador puppy.
Never be afraid to ask as many questions of the breeder that you feel you need to know. Any reputable breeder will have no
problems answering your questions as they, no doubt, will be as wary of you and the home you can offer one of their puppies as you
are of them.
